WATERHOUSE

in collaboration with Julia Manaças Architecte

Project Year: 2020 - Present

Status: On-going

Type: New build, single family home.

Location: Abercorn, Quebec

At the southern border of Quebec is a parcel of land that rests at the tip of the Green Mountains range. With a natural swimming pond foregrounding the Jay peaks to the south, the primary views of the house were already set. The challenge then became how to bring life to the other corners of the site as well as to create a compelling approach to the house that slowly reveals what lies beyond. The result was the fragmentation of the typical house block into a series of pavilions connected by one central space. The eclectic shapes create a dynamic reading of the house as one moves around it, providing a variety of views outward with depths of field both near and far.

The natural cedar shingles create a textural field that allows the best expression of the contemporary volumes of the house while engaging a material that is familiar to the area and will develop its own character over time.
