A duplex, built in 1955, undergoes the first major renovation of it’s lifetime. The highly subdivided rooms, common for that era, are opened up to increase the amount of the living space and to allow light to reach deeper into the units. The balconies are reconfigured to accommodate the new back openings and the exterior stairs are extended to reach a new roof top terrace. The latter provides an area of full sun for flower and vegetable beds and contrasts well with the backyard shaded by a four storey spruce tree.
The entrance to the basement is uncovered and expanded to access an office and a shared workshop space.
Finally, the exterior envelop is thickened to accommodate new insulation (where none existed) and to install air and vapour control layers. The end result is an updated building that is many times more performing than the original
